A play with traditional Japanese techniques with a modern twist.

Discover the magic of Maki-e, a traditional Japanese lacquer art techique reimagined for metal clay jewellery by the brilliant Etsuko Nakayama. This class blends two extraordinary techniques to help you craft truly unique jewellery - a mosaic inlay and Maki-e with gold foil.

Maki-e is an ancient Japanese technique where delicate designs are painted onto lacquered surfaces and dusted with precious powders like gold or silver for a shimmering finish. Etsuko has innovated this art, adapting it beautifully for metal clay jewelry.

You'll work with Art Clay Silver clay and syringe, resin, mosaics, and real 22K gold leaf - perfect for bringing intricate designs to life with dazzling results.

PS - The gold leaf technique is brand new - if you took Etsuko's Cherry Blossom class at YCMI, this is a different way of working with it.

Some of the techniques covered in the class;

  • Learn about precise construction

  • Adding patterns and designs using syringe

  • Mosaic inlay - with a surprising material!

  • Applying and working with delicate 22K gold leaf (thinner than the Keum-boo foil you might be used to)

  • Finishing and polishing a design with many different surface design and materials

Cost:

£499 incl VAT. Includes all materials needed and a light lunch on both days.

Running:

  • Wednesday 15th - Thursday 16th October.

  • Saturday 18th - Sunday 19th October.

  • Monday 20th - Tuesday 21st October.
